About UbiBene
UbiBene is a European travel magazine. Narrated tours and topics lead to the places, and a directory built from open data underpins them: castles, palaces, churches, monasteries, museums, monuments, viewpoints and other places worth seeing, each with its own page and location.
Where the data comes from
The content of UbiBene is built on open, freely licensed sources:
- Wikidata – facts, coordinates and categories (CC0 licence)
- OpenStreetMap – geodata (ODbL licence)
- Wikimedia Commons – images, each under a free licence with author and licence credited
- DB-IP – IP Geolocation by DB-IP – Visitor’s country for the home page (country database by DB-IP, CC BY 4.0, on our own server).
Descriptive texts are written independently from these facts; nothing is copied verbatim from copyrighted sources. The sources used are credited on each place.
How UbiBene works
Tours lead from stop to stop in a set order, with their own texts for the stops. Every place has its own page with its location and a small map, plus a description where available and links to nearby sights. Region and city pages bring together the places of a region or city. With a free account you can save sights and store tours of your own.
Coverage
UbiBene covers more than 40 European countries with hundreds of thousands of places — from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom through Poland, Czechia, Croatia and Greece to the Nordic and Baltic countries. Coverage of individual sights keeps growing, region by region.
Data quality and editing
The directory includes places whose location is established and which are described in open reference works. Minor or purely administrative entries are left out so that the directory stays clear.
Updates
The data grows continuously and is refreshed regularly from the open sources. New countries, regions and sights are added all the time.
Operator
UbiBene is operated by CHCNET Consulting (Christoph Christ), based in Hainburg an der Donau, Austria. Full contact and company details are in the imprint.
