Frequently asked questions

What is Ubibene?

Ubibene is a European travel magazine. Narrated tours and topics lead you to the places, and a directory built from open data underpins them: hundreds of thousands of sights, from ruined castles to cathedrals, each with its own page, plus a description and a picture where available.

What is a tour?

A tour is a route our editorial team has worked out for you: stops in a set order, with their own texts, plus length, duration, difficulty, start and finish. There are tours through Salzburg, Leipzig, Avignon and Bratislava, for example, and a walk along the Semmering Railway. If you would rather plan for yourself, you can also put together a tour of your own.

What is a topic?

A topic brings together places that have something in common – a landscape, a style of building, an era, a family – and, where they exist, leads you to the matching tours.

Are there audio guides?

Yes, for some sights and tour stops, in several languages. Where there is one, you can listen to it right on the page, and on tours while you are out and about.

How do I find sights near me?

Tap ‘Nearby’ in the menu. If you allow location access, Ubibene shows you the sights around you, sorted by distance, and you can search within them. For anywhere else, use the search; it also recognises names in other languages, such as ‘Prague’ for Praha.

What are the best places to visit in the UK?

The Ubibene directory includes the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, Hadrian’s Wall, York Minster, Edinburgh Castle, Caernarfon Castle and the Giant’s Causeway, among many others, each with its own page and arranged by region.

Where do the texts and pictures come from?

The tours and the narrated topics are written by the Ubibene editorial team. The descriptions in the directory are based on facts from open data sources, mainly Wikidata. Descriptive texts are written independently from these facts; nothing is copied verbatim from copyrighted sources. The sources used are credited on each place. Most pictures come from Wikimedia Commons, alongside our own photos, each with author and licence. All sources are listed on the ‘Sources’ page.

Does Ubibene cost anything?

No. Tours, topics, audio guides and every page of the directory are free, even without an account.

Do I need an account?

No. Reading, listening and searching all work without signing in. You only need a free account if you want to save sights or store a tour of your own.

How many sights are listed?

The directory covers 495,867 sights in 41 European countries and keeps growing from open data sources.

Which languages is Ubibene available in?

Eight: German, English, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Slovenian, Italian and French. Not every text is available in every language yet; translations are being added step by step.

Can I use Ubibene on my phone while travelling?

Yes. Ubibene runs in your phone’s browser, so you don’t need an app, and you can use tours and audio guides right on the spot. Tours with audio guides can be loaded in advance for offline use.
