Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt (Ebbs)

The parish church of Ebbs stands in the village of Ebbs in the Kufstein district of Tirol. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the Kufstein deanery in the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The church is protected as a listed building and is sometimes called the ‘Ebbs Cathedral’ or the ‘Lower Country Cathedral’.
The present church was built between 1748 and 1756 by Abraham Millauer after the earlier Romanesque church of 1163 was completely demolished. Inside, the late Baroque structure is richly decorated, especially the high altar which houses a carved Madonna and Child by Josef Martin Lengauer. The Madonna probably dates from the predecessor building. The ceiling shows paintings by Josef Adam Mölk and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, including her birth above the altar and her Assumption along the nave.
The organ, built in 1976 by Reinisch-Pirchner, fits inside a historic case from 1796. Five bells hang in the tower, tuned to a b0-d1-f1-g1-b1 sequence, cast in 1949–50 by Pfundner and later restored by Rudolf Perner. The tower windows now have louvres and the bells have regained their traditional clappers, giving a more unified sound. Visitors enter a space of gilded altars, painted ceilings and polished wood, framed by the calm village setting of Ebbs.
