Schloss Bruck stands on a rocky outcrop above the town of Lienz in the Austrian Alps. Built in the 13th century, it rises 711 metres above sea level and once served as the stronghold for the Meinhardiner Counts of Görz. The castle’s chapel holds frescoes painted in 1490 by Simon von Taisten, a local artist of the period. In 1500 the last count, Leonhard of Gorizia, left the castle to the Habsburgs under Emperor Maximilian I. During the 1796 French Revolutionary Wars, French troops under General Barthélemy Catherine Joubert briefly occupied the fortress.

The castle now houses a museum opened in 1945 after the city of Lienz bought it in 1942. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures and folk art, with a strong focus on works by Albin Egger-Lienz, a painter from Lienz. Beyond its displays, the building hosts theatre performances, concerts, readings and evening gatherings. The museum acts as a cultural centre for the region, drawing visitors interested in local history and art.

Visitors walk through medieval halls and climb narrow staircases to reach the chapel with its vivid frescoes. Rooms display furniture, weapons and everyday objects from past centuries. Outside, terraces offer wide views over the town and the surrounding Dolomite peaks. The castle’s stone walls and slate roofs remain largely unchanged since the 15th century.
