Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital

The Dr. von Haunersches Kinderspital stands in Munich’s city-centre campus, part of the LMU Klinikum. Founded in 1846 by August Hauner, it merged with the local children’s policlinic in 1998 to become the present paediatric hospital. The building houses both general paediatrics and paediatric surgery, with 180 beds in total. There are 119 beds for general care and 61 for surgery, alongside multiple subspecialty services. Over 500 staff work across the two hospitals, ensuring round-the-clock care.
The hospital’s history stretches back nearly two centuries. August Hauner opened the original institution in 1846 to treat children separately from adults. A century and a half later, the merger created a single, modern facility. Today it remains Munich’s leading children’s hospital, recognised for its research and teaching alongside clinical work. The name honours its founder while signalling its place in the city’s medical landscape.
Visitors approach through the campus’s central buildings, where the hospital’s entrance is clearly marked. Inside, corridors lead to wards equipped for general paediatrics and specialist surgery. Consulting rooms, play areas for young patients, and teaching spaces fill the floors above ground level. The atmosphere is calm, designed to ease children and families during treatment. Outside, the campus blends with Munich’s university quarter, providing a quiet setting despite its central location.
